Inspired by a pursuit of ergonomic perfection, the Levant collection of cabinet and door hardware draws its inspiration from the ancient form of the mortar and pestle, resulting in a beautifully soft, curved design.

Inspiration

"We wanted to create a lever that was not only unique in its design but comfortable in the hand, whichever way it was gripped."

Mark Harper, Senior Product Designer

The Story of Levant

What began as a search for a doorknob that could be comfortably gripped from the end (for example, when approaching a door from the side rather than directly from the front) took shape during a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum. There, we were drawn to the ancient mortar and pestle—ergonomic by nature—which provides a shorter lever with a pleasantly rounded end.

In use for thousands of years—first by the Kebaran culture in the Levant—the minimal change in the shape of the mortar and pestle over time is a testament to their truly functional design.

These characteristics are reflected in the gentle curve of the rosette, which gives way to the door handle’s shank and flows from there into a smooth, rounded lever. The sturdy, solid character of a traditional mortar and pestle is expressed in the robust proportions of the rosette and the handle.
